Test your sewer smarts at Scienceworks

From today, Melbourne Water and Scienceworks will run a competition for kids to win one of 100 family passes to visit Scienceworks these school holidays.

Kids will need to test their sewer smarts and take a quiz to win a family visit to Scienceworks where they get to play Flushback, an Augmented Reality game teaching them more about sewage systems.

“Many people don’t think about what happens after they flush the toilet, so this is a fun way to teach them. It’s quite a journey and involves some significant infrastructure,” Mr Dixon said.

The Hobsons Bay Main Sewer is a critical part of our complex network of underground sewerage pipes, transferring around 30% of Melbourne’s wastewater to the Western Treatment Plant. To ensure the system can cater for population growth, particularly in the Fishermans Bend precinct, it’s currently being upgraded – right in the heart of Scienceworks.

Scienceworks General Manager, Jonathan Shearer, said kids are fascinated to see the construction and machinery in action through the viewing windows.

“At Scienceworks we often talk about what a career in engineering is like. With this project happening onsite, kids get to see that work firsthand. We hope it inspires some future engineers to pursue their STEM passions,” Mr Shearer said.

The Hobson’s Bay Main Sewer project forms part of a broader program of works Melbourne Water is undertaking on several aging sewers around the city. Through an extensive network of underground pipes and sewers, we manage and treat our city’s sewage, ensuring the health of our environment, our communities, and our families.
