Event details

Do you know what happens to poo when it’s flushed down the loo? Test your sewer smarts with our quick, kid-friendly quiz, and you could win 1 of 100 family passes to visit Scienceworks this school holidays!

Can you tell sewage from sewerage?

Two children in front of construction hoarding for the Hobsons Bay Main Sewer. The hoarding is decorated with old-fashioned gauges, and the construction site is visible through clear cut-out windows.
See a new sewer being built outside Scienceworks!

Did you know that in Melbourne, over 320 billion litres of sewage enters underground sewer pipes each year? That’s a lot!

One big pipe, called the Hobsons Bay Main Sewer, carries 30% of all that sewage to a treatment plant in Werribee. This is where the sewage gets cleaned and turned into water that’s used for things like watering parks and gardens, and even firefighting!

The Hobsons Bay Main Sewer is really important, but it’s getting old. To keep our city healthy, we’re building a new sewer under the Yarra River.

You can go to Scienceworks to see the engineers hard at work, and learn more about Melbourne’s sewerage system by playing our AR (augmented reality) game: ‘Flushback’!

Think you know how sewerage works? Test your sewer smarts with our quiz and you and your family could win a visit to Scienceworks these school holidays – see details below.
