Flooding and drainage

Storms and floods are a natural part of Melbourne’s weather but can greatly impact our way of life. Although we can’t stop floods from happening, we can all play a role in minimising their impacts.

Floods, like bushfires, can threaten lives, damage homes and businesses, and cause stress and disruption. They pose a growing challenge as our city expands over natural land that absorbs rainwater, and as climate change brings more unpredictable weather.

That’s why Melbourne Water aims to manage flood risks and minimise impacts to people, businesses, infrastructure and the environment. We work with local and state government agencies, emergency services, the insurance and private sector, and the community to achieve this.

Our role includes:

  • setting building and renovation criteria to minimise risk to properties
  • building, maintaining and upgrading drains and other flood infrastructure
  • providing flood information and education to communities.

As the region’s floodplain manager, we lead the development of the Port Phillip and Westernport Flood Management Strategy.
