Melbourne Water’s innovative projects shine at construction awards

Melbourne Water has been recognised for excellence at the annual Civil Construction Federation (CCF) Victoria Earth Awards, winning two categories:

Shakespeare Grove Main Drain Outlet Renewal project in St Kilda took out the Category 4 Award (Project value $10 Million – $30 Million). This joint venture with John Holland-KBR not only carries stormwater safely away from local properties to minimise flooding, its circular viewing platform provides the community with stunning views of Port Phillip Bay.

Upper Yarra Dam Safety Upgrade with Seymour Whyte Constructions Pty Ltd won the Category 5 Award (Project value $30 Million – $75 Million). The proactive works on the dam, which was built in 1957, bring it up to modern day standards. They ensure the continued integrity and stability of the dam wall so the reservoir can continue to supply world class drinking water to Melburnians.

Also runner-up in the same category was the Western Treatment Plant Sludge Drying Pans Project. This project, a joint venture with John Holland-KBR, increased the sludge drying capacity at the site to cater for future growth. It ensured Melbourne Water can continue to be a world leader in environmentally friendly sewage treatment.

Melbourne Water General Manager, Major Program Delivery Craig Dixon said this is an excellent result and demonstrates the organisation’s commitment to collaborating with our partners to bring ambitious innovations to life.

“I congratulate everyone who worked on these incredible projects amid challenges including highly technical scope, unprecedented weather systems and the COVID-19 pandemic,” Mr Dixon said.

“The projects are wonderful examples of infrastructure that enhance life and liveability for the greater Melbourne region today, tomorrow and for future generations.”

The Earth Awards celebrate outstanding achievements in civil construction, with judging criteria including construction excellence, environmental sustainability, and project management.

The winning projects now qualify as finalists in the CCF National Earth Awards, held in the Great Hall at Parliament House in Canberra on Friday 18 November, 2022.
