Melbourne Water projects go head to head at this year’s Victorian Water Awards

Melbourne Water has dominated one of the categories for next month’s Australian Water Association Victorian Water Awards.

Four projects, which deliver a lasting legacy for our future, have been named as finalists in the Infrastructure Project Innovation Award category.

Melbourne Water General Manager Program Delivery, Craig Dixon, said it is a big achievement to be recognised for excellence by water industry peers in this way.

“I congratulate all involved in these incredible infrastructure projects, including our project partners, for their collaboration, innovation and dedication to delivering outstanding outcomes,” Mr Dixon said.

“Melbourne Water manages all parts of the water cycle – and this is highlighted in the diversity of these projects. They cover improvements to biodiversity, reducing flood risk and setting world leading standards for wastewater treatment.

“These projects will benefit the community and environment not only for today, but for generations to come.”

Melbourne Water is also thrilled to be a finalist in the Research and Development Excellence Award category. This nomination is for an important piece of work which complements the organisation’s recent partnership with international water companies Aarhus Vand (Denmark) and Severn Trent (United Kingdom). The three organisations are working together to develop technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of wastewater treatment sites to net-zero by 2030.

The Melbourne Water nominees for the Vic Water Awards are:

Two winning projects

Melbourne Water will proudly represent the state in two categories at the National Australian Water Association (AWA) Awards in May next year after success in the AWA Victorian awards in November.

The AWA water awards program recognises outstanding achievements of individuals, organisations and students across the Australian water sector. The awards showcase innovation, leadership, infrastructure and inspiring positive change to drive a sustainable water future.

R&D Excellence Award Winner: Real Greenhouse Gas Emission Measurement and Reporting for Real Reductions as We Move Toward Net Zero.

This program aims to develop an unprecedented systematic framework for water utilities to measure and quantify direct greenhouse gas emissions from sewage treatment systems and develop tools to identify means to reduce them. It is a collaboration with The University of Queensland, The University of Melbourne and Ektimo.

Infrastructure Project Innovation Awards (Metro) Winner: Shakespeare Grove Main Drain Outlet Renewal.

This innovative project replaced the 70-year-old main drain outlet at St Kilda. It not only carries stormwater safely away from local properties to minimise flooding, its 360 degree viewing platform is an inviting space which provides the community with stunning views of Port Phillip Bay.

The design and construction of this project was delivered with John Holland-KBR and Stantec.
