The Western Treatment Plant opens its gates again

Tickets have been snapped up to the first public tour of the Western Treatment Plant since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.   

The tour, on Sunday 11 September, will be co-hosted by Melbourne Water and Open House Melbourne. It proved so popular registrations sold out in 25 minutes.   

The Western Treatment Plant (WTP) Manager Alanna Wright said the sell-out demonstrates the level of interest in the iconic site – and with good reason.  

“There’s a level of curiosity about how the treatment plant works, but there is so much more to this site,” Ms Wright said.  

“The WTP is a world class facility which treats more than half of Melbourne’s sewage, but it also turns waste into recycled water, nutrients and energy ready for re-use.  

“Furthermore, the site, which is around the size of Phillip Island, has historical significance and is proud to be home to more than 300 species of birds.” 

For those who missed out on community tour tickets this time, it’s possible to join a guided virtual tour on Tuesday 20 September (link here). This includes the opportunity to talk to our education, heritage, major projects and community engagement teams.
