We are removing large woody weeds along a 500m stretch of Merri Creek from February to May 2026. This section of Merri Creek is home to the endangered Growling Grass Frog whose habitat is threatened by invasive woody weeds such as Desert Ash.

The Hawthorn East Main Drain (HEMD) is part of the complex drainage system which Melbourne Water manages. A recent inspection of the HEMD found that sections may be reaching the end of their working life resulting in brick separation and some brick loss. That’s why at Melbourne Water we are upgrading the HEMD so that it can continue to ensure that rainfall and ground water can safely flow away from built-up areas into rivers and creeks.

Improvements to Riddells Creek in Centennial Park, Macedon - new rockwork, weed removal and native revegetation
We are restoring the native vegetation of 47 hectares (3 kms) along Devilbend Creek, adjacent to the Devilbend Reservoir. Over four years we are removing weeds and planting 11,000 indigenous plants to create a healthier., more resilient ecosystem. These works will protect the waterway from erosion and improve habitat for native plants and animals such as the Dwarf Galaxias, Southern Toadlet and Eastern Long-necked Turtle.
We’re working to improve the health of the Little Yarra River in Yarra Junction, by undertaking weed control and revegetation along the streamside.
