Frogs play a vital role in the ecology of wetlands and waterways. They breathe and drink through their skin and as such are sensitive to drought and pollution. Unfortunately, frog populations are under threat and many species are disappearing or at danger of going extinct.
As we recognise World Water Day, Melbourne Water and ABC Education are working together to help improve water literacy levels in schools across the nation.
Melbourne Water, a leading partner for the Paddle for Patterson event, was proud to support and be involved in the innovative community event that highlighted the impact of litter in our waterways and the need to take action to mitigate it. Held last weekend, this fun-filled event celebrated the launch of the Lower Dandenong Creek Litter Action Plan, which primarily focuses on reducing litter in the lower Dandenong Creek waterway, stormwater network, and ultimately to Port Phillip Bay.
Thornhill Park Retarding Basin and Wetland requires some rectification works on the outlet structure, north of the freeway to allow for the water levels to naturally balance within the system as designed. Once the water levels have been lowered landscaping works can commence around the park. Melbourne Water will undertake the landscaping works, which will include outdoor fitness equipment, a viewing platform and plantings around the area.
Following four consecutive years of above average rainfall Melbourne’s water supply for the year ahead remains secure with water storage levels currently at a healthy 91 per cent.
