Melbourne Water is the custodian of 33,000 hectares of land across greater Melbourne. Much of this land is available on request for projects which will benefit the wider community - as well as for private and commercial purposes including filming, photography and events.
As Melbourne grows it is becoming more important to provide opportunities for exercise, such as cycling and walking, community interactions and access to open outdoor areas. There is strong evidence of a positive relationship between providing access to safe, green open space and the physical health and wellbeing of our communities.
Apply to use our land
To encourage the use of our land for community projects, we have created a web application which streamlines the process of finding land and expressing interest in using it for community benefit.
'Our Space. Your Place' is a map-based application that holds details of the availability, size and potential use of our land.
Use the application to search for an appropriate space for your community concept, source the skills, funding and resources required and then send us an expression of interest. Big or small, short- or long-term, we are interested in a wide variety of projects which can benefit your local community.
Some of the project concepts we may consider are:
- community festivals and pop-ups
- educational spaces
- play spaces
- community vegetable gardens
- native vegetation plantings
