Melbourne Water finalist in Infrastructure Project Innovation Excellence Award
Melbourne Water, with John Holland-KBR JV, is a proud finalist in the Australian Water Association (AWA) Awards for an innovative approach to the Biogas Handling System Stage 1 Upgrade at the Eastern Treatment Plant.
The Infrastructure Project Innovation Award recognises significant and innovative water infrastructure projects driving prosperity and sustainability.
Committed to enhancing life and liveability for the greater Melbourne region, the team involved in designing this project were able to implement several innovative approaches, including increased capacity, monitoring and automation, and improved safety, production, operability, reliability, and plant longevity to deliver on Melbourne Water’s commitment to net zero.
Nick Fung, Melbourne Water Senior Project Manager says, “This project is an industry-leading example of delivering sustainable outcomes by maximising conversion of waste to energy and reducing reliance on traditional resources in what was a highly complex and brownfield environment. Achieving so many benefits ahead of schedule and under budget has been a real testament to the contributions and well laid plans by individuals across the value chain and the highly collaborative relationship between Melbourne Water and the John Holland-KBR JV.”
The biogas handling system, previously below ground, has now been constructed above ground and outdoors making it safer for operators. Additionally, the design allows maintenance to be undertaken with minimal impacts.
Fung says, “It’s exciting to see the progression and completion of our new biogas handling system, being able to develop innovative solutions not only reduces Melbourne Water’s emissions, but also incorporates projected growth and will connect seamlessly into future works, better preparing Melbourne Water to meet the needs of our community.”
