Community consultation opens on Tarago Boat Ramp project
Melbourne Water is inviting community feedback on a new Recreational Area Management Plan and proposed waterway rules for Tarago Reservoir, with consultation open for four weeks from 2 March 2026.
The consultation supports the Tarago Boat Ramp project – a state-led initiative to enhance recreational access at the reservoir. The project will offer new opportunities for social connection and outdoor activities by providing a boat ramp for use by non-petrol-powered boats at North Jindivick Road, car parking, toilets, security measures, and signage, ensuring local residents and visitors can safely and conveniently enjoy the water.
The project is being delivered in partnership with Better Boating Victoria, the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, Baw Baw Shire Council, Gippsland Water and other agencies.
Melbourne Water is developing a Recreational Area Management Plan and waterway rules to ensure recreational access is introduced safely and sustainably, while protecting the reservoir’s critical role in supplying drinking water.
The documents detail how safe boating and fishing opportunities will be supported, with rules designed to safeguard drinking water quality while allowing recreational use.
Melbourne Water Executive General Manager Service and Asset Lifecycle, Matt Daley, said maintaining a safe, clean drinking water supply from Tarago Reservoir remains Melbourne Water’s top priority.
“The Tarago Boat Ramp project will give locals and visitors a new way to enjoy the reservoir, while ensuring we continue to protect our world-class drinking water,” said Daley.
Melbourne Water and Gippsland Water have recently delivered upgrades at the Tarago, Warragul and Neerim South water treatment plants. These improvements, combined with new access rules and supporting infrastructure, will maintain water quality at Tarago Reservoir while allowing small, non-petrol motorised boats for recreational fishing.
Tarago Reservoir is an important part of Victoria’s drinking water supply system for Melbourne and Gippsland communities, managed by Melbourne Water.
Construction of the Tarago Boat Ramp is scheduled to begin in mid-2026, with completion expected in late 2026.
