Winter 2025 has been very dry, and this has contributed to the driest January-June streamflows on record, with catchment rainfall down 11.2 per cent on the 30-year (1995-2024) average and streamflow around half of last year’s levels. While this has taken storage volumes to their lowest levels for the end of winter since 2020, the Victorian Desalination Plant has stepped up, delivering over 16 billion litres since 1 July to keep Melbourne’s water storages topped up.

A warmer-than-average autumn has led to an 8% drop in Greater Melbourne’s water storages since the end of summer, with current levels sitting at 73%, down 14% from the end of autumn 2024.

With increased discarded fishing lines, illegal yabby traps being found along the Werribee River, and the rising threat of invasive Carp to native species, Melbourne Water has devised a free community event to tackle two problems simultaneously. 

September is Platypus Month. Classed as vulnerable, Greater Melbourne is home to only 1,000-3,000 platypuses. They face many threats, one of the greatest is ‘loopy litter’ with 4 per cent of the platypus population entangled at any one time. In the Werribee River, that figure spikes to a staggering 15 per cent.

Melbourne Water is pleased to announce the reopening of Greenvale Reservoir Park’s southern section, unlocking more than 37 hectares of vibrant green space for the local community and visitors to enjoy.

The fallout from the Derrimut chemical fire continues as Melbourne Water has received and continues treating 12 million litres of contaminated firewater at its Western Treatment Plant (WTP): the equivalent of six Olympic swimming pools.

The community at Truganina turned out on Saturday to celebrate the opening of a new park along the old Main Outfall Sewer, where locals and visitors can meet, play, and relax.
