Melbourne Water leads Litter Action Plan to combat littering in Lower Dandenong Creek

Melbourne Water, a leading partner for the Paddle for Patterson event, was proud to support and be involved in the innovative community event that highlighted the impact of litter in our waterways and the need to take action to mitigate it. Held last weekend, this fun-filled event celebrated the launch of the Lower Dandenong Creek Litter Action Plan, which primarily focuses on reducing litter in the lower Dandenong Creek waterway, stormwater network, and ultimately to Port Phillip Bay.

Around 60 people paddled the waters on kayaks to collect litter tangled in the reeds, while others walked along the banks collecting litter on foot. Over 500 bottles and cans were collected, most of which were recycled into a supplied Container Deposit Scheme facility, raising money to support the Port Phillip EcoCentre.

Polystyrene, wrappers, a lot of dog balls, a mop bucket, and half a printer were among much more miscellaneous rubbish on the day. Participants were also able to enjoy stalls, fuel up at the barbeque and enjoy hands-on activities.

The Lower Dandenong Creek Action Plan will install a new litter trap in the lower stretches of Dandenong Creek, and importantly, it will also consider strategies and campaigns to stop litter at the source. Smart technologies will aid the close monitoring of waterways and support the maintenance of stormwater infrastructure and open space.

Melbourne Water Executive General Manager Service & Asset Lifecycle, Craig Dixon said, “As Melbourne continues to grow more litter is reaching our waterways, which is why Melbourne Water, together with other likeminded stakeholders, works so hard to ensure they can be enjoyed today, tomorrow and for generations to come”

This collaborative partnership is between waterway manager Melbourne Water, the Cities of Casey, Greater Dandenong and Kingston, Parks Victoria and the EPA.
