We provide wholesale water supply and sewage management services to the retail water corporations, who in turn provide it to households across Melbourne. The retail water corporations deliver water sourced from Melbourne Water to the community, and collect their sewage before transferring the majority of it into Melbourne Water’s sewerage system for treatment.

Melbourne Water works collaboratively with water retail companies to deliver valued and affordable water and sewage services to the community, increasing the trust and confidence of the sector. We aim to establish constructive relationships with the water retail companies that ensure the delivery of efficient, effective, innovative, sustainable and valued services to the community, with a best for community focus.
Water is delivered to the retail water corporations from water supply catchments and the Victorian Desalination Project through a network of water supply reservoirs and transfer pipelines. Melbourne Water’s water supply system is the primary source of water for the retail water corporations and collectively, these customers use the largest volume of water from the system. Our system also supplies water to some regional water corporations, but is generally only a supplementary source of water for these customers.
The sewage produced by households, commercial, and industrial activities in Melbourne is removed by retail water corporations and transferred for treatment to Melbourne Water using a different network of pipelines and sewage treatment plants. Some sewage is treated by the retail water corporations, but the majority is transferred into Melbourne Water’s sewerage system and treated at the Eastern Treatment Plant at Bangholme or the Western Treatment Plant at Werribee.
Melbourne Water also supplies recycled water to some water retail corporations.
