Have your say: Reimagining Tarralla Creek enters Stage 2
A stretch of underground stormwater pipe is about to become a natural creek again in Melbourne’s east. Melbourne Water is inviting community feedback, as the Reimagining Tarralla Creek project progresses to a new stage (Stage 2), restoring a further 886 metres of creek. Consultation runs from 23 March to 26 April 2026.
Reimagining Tarralla Creek initially began in 2017, set to transform underground stormwater pipes and channels at Tarralla Creek into natural waterways and vibrant green spaces. Completed in 2022, Stage 1 delivered 500 metres of naturalised waterway and improvements to the Croydon Wetland, such as a new pedestrian bridge and a bird hide.
Building on the project’s award-winning achievements, Melbourne Water plans to restore a new section of the creek into a more natural, wildlife‑friendly waterway with protected trees and walking paths. The project will create inviting places for people to relax, explore and connect with nature through crossing opportunities, a meandering naturalised stream and landscaping.
The Reimagining Tarralla Creek project is jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust under the Urban Rivers and Catchments Program and Melbourne Water.
Melbourne Water Executive General Manager Service and Asset Lifecycle, Matt Daley, said Stage 2 continues the long-term vision to bring the waterway to a more natural state.
“As our city continues to grow in size and density, easy access to natural environments becomes increasingly important for liveability.
“Stage 2 will turn a narrow, underused strip of land into a beautiful community creek, right on local residents’ doorsteps. We take pride in creating more attractive, green open spaces for Melburnians.”
Melbourne Water is leading this project in partnership with the Australian Government, Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation, Maroondah City Council, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, and the local community.
The entire project site extends for approximately 1,900 metres from Dorset Road to Eastfield Road in Croydon. Construction for Stage 2 is scheduled to start in early 2027.
