In collaboration with community groups, local councils and our partners, we’ve created a litter prevention toolkit.
This resource is designed for:
- community litter advocacy groups
- councils
- animal research
- welfare organisations
- others.
The toolkit will provide interested groups with the tools they need to tackle and help prevent littering across Melbourne. It draws on insights from local councils, litter advocacy and animal welfare groups, which highlighted the urgent need to better understand how urban littering impacts our waterways and the wildlife that inhabit these ecosystems.
The Toolkit
The simple and impactful “Bin it or bring it home” tagline highlights how littering in urban areas directly harms our waterways. The connection between urban spaces and waterways is emphasised to illustrate how litter is transported across Melbourne.
This toolkit includes:
- semi-customisable posters
- social media post templates
- bin decals and floor decals
- litter prevention discussion guides

Each element has been thoughtfully designed to stop littering at its source, encouraging Melburnians to “Bin it or bring it home.” Some of the assets are semi-customisable with spaces for you to add in your logo if required.
Please ensure you have the appropriate permissions from your local council or organisation before printing or using any toolkit materials.
Toolkit assets
- Posters & social media tiles
-
Semi-customisable posters feature a range of urban and waterway locations around Melbourne, paired with clear messaging that shows how litter in our streets ends up in our waterways.
We encourage toolkit supporters to print these posters and display them in high-traffic or high-litter areas in their communities, ensuring council approval is obtained beforehand. The posters are also suitable to use as a bin decal.
Access the full suite of posters and a guide on how to customise them.
These designs have also been adapted into social media tiles, sharing the same important message.
- Bin decals
-
Encouraging positive anti-littering behaviours is essential. That’s why we’ve adapted the “Bin it or bring it home” message into bin-specific decals. These decals aim to remind Melburnians to use bins whenever possible, reinforcing the impact of their actions by highlighting the waterways they are helping to protect.
These assets are not customisable, as they are formatted to specific printing standards.
- Floor decals
-
Simple and effective floor decals have been designed to remind Melburnians of their proximity to a bin or to take their litter home. A fun and engaging decal has also been created to complement the toolkit imagery.
These assets are not customisable, as they are formatted to specific printing standards.
- Discussion guides
-
These guides are designed to spark conversations with construction groups, schools, and community organisations about getting involved in litter advocacy. They focus on prevention and clean-up efforts. They include valuable litter statistics and practical tips for fostering litter prevention behaviours in different settings.
