Frogs play an important role in the waterway ecosystem and are easily affected by changes to their environment. Get involved in our community frog monitoring program, and collect data to help us manage frog populations and raise awareness of waterway health issues.

Being a frog monitor is easy and fun — and you don’t have to be a frog expert! Simply download the free Frog Census app for Apple or Android, and record frog calls at any river, creek, wetland or other type of waterway.

If you can't download the app:

  1. Capture the frog call on another recording device
  2. Fill out the datasheet below
  3. Email your recording and datasheet to [email protected]

We'll then get a professional ecologist to identify the frog species.

How we use the data

We use the data to inform our planning and decisions on waterway health. It will also be added to CSIRO's Atlas of Living Australia and the Victorian Biodiversity Atlas to share biodiversity knowledge about endangered species.

Create frog habitat

Habitat loss is a major threat to frogs across greater Melbourne. You can take action by creating frog-friendly habitat in your own backyard, school or community garden, increasing living space and helping link up disconnected frog communities.
