Why this is important

Melbourne experiences a range of rainfall and storm events, and flooding is a natural part of our landscape and weather cycle. Melbourne Water manages more than 200 retarding basins. These basins are designed to reduce flooding by catching heavy rainfall and holding it in reserves of low-lying land, helping to reduce flooding downstream. Once storm water is collected, it is naturally treated within this system prior to being slowly released back into the environment to follow the natural drainage lines into our creeks, rivers and eventually to the bay, to help reduce the risk of flooding to surrounding homes and businesses.

Investigative Works

Geotechnical investigations are now underway to inform the detailed design of the project. These investigations include:

  • Excavation of test pits and drilling of boreholes to assess the condition of the embankment fill and foundation.

  • Soil sampling and testing.

The results from investigations will inform how we manage the Barrymore Road Retarding Basin and associated flood risks, keeping our community safe now and for generations to come.

During investigations, you may notice increased activity in the area, including machinery, earthmoving equipment, a drilling rig, and short periods of noise and vibration. We will make every effort to minimise the impact of these essential works on the local community and on the environment.

What’s next?

The project team will be engaging with the local community to share information about the project and seek feedback on liveability options to help inform the project design for the Attwood Creek Reserve. Further details on upcoming engagement opportunities will be shared on the project website.
