CurrentMelbourne Water and Merri-bek Council are working together to consider options for how to reduce the impacts of flooding in and around Alister Street in Fitzroy North.
Residents in Alister Street in Fitzroy North, and the surrounding community, have been previously impacted by flooding, including the severe flooding event in 2003.
We recognise the impacts these events can have on residents and are committed to working with Merri-bek Council to better understand local flood risk and identify opportunities to improve community resilience.
About the investigation
Melbourne Water and Merri-bek Council are working together to investigate the drainage catchment and assess options that could help manage and reduce flood risk in and around Alister Street.
The purpose of this work is to determine what options are technically feasible, understand their effectiveness in reducing flood risk, and assess their potential costs and benefits.
Options currently being investigated
- Redesigning sections of the road and drainage network, including a potential road hump to help redirect floodwater
- Improving how stormwater is conveyed away from properties and into Sumner Park
- Improving drainage pathways from the area to Merri Creek
- Updating planning scheme information to ensure flood risk is appropriately considered in future planning decisions
- Promoting flood preparedness resources to help residents prepare for future flood events
Next steps
Technical investigations into flood mitigation options for the Alister Street area are underway.
Once complete, the findings will help inform future decisions about flood risk management priorities for the area.
Any major flood mitigation works will be subject to further assessment, feasibility requirements, and funding availability.
Residents will be kept informed of the outcomes of the investigation and any next steps to help reduce the impacts of flooding in and around Alister Street.
