Warrandyte riverbank recovery works

What does the project involve?

The project will:

• Stabilise and repair damaged sections of riverbank
• Build a terraced amphitheatre to create a formal access point to the water
• Revegetate the area with around 10,000 native plants
• Install fencing to guide pedestrian access to more resilient areas

No native trees or plants will be removed, with only site preparation and weed control taking place ahead of planting.

These works will increase safe accessibility for people wanting to interact with the waterway while also protecting native vegetation and wildlife habitat.

This project is being delivered in partnership with Manningham Council, in consultation with the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation. 

Local impacts

From February to April 2027, sections of the riverfront will be temporarily closed in stages to allow rockwork, fencing and revegetation to be carried out safely. Pedestrian detours will be in place where needed.

The main walking paths and access to the river through Warrandyte will remain open throughout construction and after the works are completed.

Some of the informal tracks will need to be permanently removed to allow the riverbank to recover and the new native plants to develop. 

Why are these works needed?

The Warrandyte riverfront is one of the area’s most popular natural spaces and this stretch of river is home to platypus and other native wildlife. Years of heavy use and informal tracks have caused erosion along the riverbank and put stress on established eucalyptus along the water’s edge.

By stabilising the bank and planting around 10,000 native plants, we’re helping this stretch of Birrarung recover and making sure it stays healthy for the community and wildlife that rely on it.
