From April until late 2026, we’re carrying out underground repairs to the heritage-listed Main Outfall Sewer near Parkvista Drive, Truganina.
These works will ensure the pipeline’s heritage values are conserved, and that it’s in a good, safe condition to support community enjoyment of the open space created as part of the Greening the Pipeline project.
Why this is important
The Main Outfall Sewer was built in the 1890s and transferred most of Melbourne’s sewage to Werribee for treatment until it was decommissioned in 1993. In 2005, the Federation Trail for cyclists and pedestrians was built along the Main Outfall Sewer pipeline reserve.
Since 2013, the Greening the Pipeline project has been transforming the heritage-listed Main Outfall Sewer reserve into a greener, cooler, linear parkland and a more enjoyable community space. Although the underground sewer is no longer in use, it needs to be maintained in a good, safe condition to support public use of the landscaping along this section of the corridor, referred to as Zone 5.
Wyndham City Council is leading the delivery of the Greening the Pipeline project in partnership with Melbourne Water, Greater Western Water, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), Department of Transport and Planning, Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, and is supported by Greening the West.
What’s happening and when
Underground masonry repair works will occur from April until late 2026.
Works will involve:
- Site set up and preparatory works
- Establishing a small site shed to house workers and store supplies
- Constructing scaffolding for workers to access the underground sewer
- Underground repairs to sewer brickwork.
Location
Works will take place along a 325m section of the Main Outfall Sewer to the east of the Skeleton Creek Aqueduct in Hoppers Crossing, and to the south of Parkvista Drive, Truganina.
A small site shed and scaffolding will be established within the currently fenced-off sewer reserve, opposite the intersection of Parkvista Drive and Corinna Avenue.
Timing
Site set up will occur from April, with works to be completed by late 2026.
Works will occur between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
What to expect
As this section of the Main Outfall Sewer is underground, the only aspect of the works which will be visible to nearby residents and users of the open space will be the activity around the sewer access point.
During the works:
- a small site shed and scaffolding will be established within the currently fenced-off sewer reserve
- work crews will be present, and supplies, vehicles and equipment will be stored within the fenced-off reserve near the site shed
- vehicles will enter the work site from Parkvista Drive using an existing access track opposite Corinna Avenue
- there will be no noise, dust or vibration, and works are unlikely to impact surrounding residents.
At times, the shared path will need to be temporarily closed to cyclists and pedestrians while vehicles access the work site. At these times, we will have traffic and pedestrian management in place. Please make sure to follow instructions from traffic management staff and detour signs for your safety and that of our workers.
