Melbourne Water wins two gongs at 2025 Victorian Water Awards
Melbourne Water has won two accolades at the 2025 Victorian Water Awards, recognising its leadership in research and development, sustainability and innovation in water infrastructure.
Melbourne Water was also a finalist in the categories of Organisational Excellence, Young Water Professional of the Year and Water Professional of the Year.
Melbourne Water’s Managing Director, Dr Nerina Di Lorenzo, congratulated the winners and celebrated their contributions to the sector.
“These awards are a testament to the dedication and ingenuity of our people and partners as part of the important work they do for our customers,” said Dr Di Lorenzo.
“We’re proud to see our teams recognised for their work in advancing sustainable water solutions, driving positive change and delivering for the communities we serve.”
R&D Excellence Award
In a national collaboration, Melbourne Water has played a key role in the development of the world’s first transforming biosolids training centre. The training centre aims to transform how biosolids are managed in Australia and develop best-in-class practices for global adoption.
The establishment of the training centre has enabled industry-wide training and capacity building, innovation in community engagement and the creation of pioneering projects focused on biosolids.
“We are pleased to see a major knowledge uplift on biosolids, thanks to the cross-sectoral collaboration in this project,” said Chris Brace, Melbourne Water Executive General Manager Service Futures.
“Melbourne Water is proud to be involved in a global-first initiative that redefines biosolids management and education.”
Infrastructure Project Innovation Award (Metro)
Recognised for its exceptional innovation and positive impacts on the community, environment and society, the 5 West Nutrient Removal Plant project successfully replaced the existing 55E activated sludge facility at Melbourne Water’s West Treatment Plant.
The facility can now process 150 million litres of wastewater each day, equivalent to 60 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
“This award celebrates innovation in wastewater treatment and environmental stewardship,” said Sean Hanrahan, Melbourne Water Executive General Manager Service and Asset Lifecycle.
“It’s a milestone for sustainable infrastructure delivery.”
All winners will now progress as finalists for the Australian Water Awards, to be announced at Ozwater’26.
