We share the greatest backyard
In Melbourne, rivers, creeks and our iconic bays are essential to our way of life, and the lifeblood of our natural landscape.
That’s why at Melbourne Water, we are constantly tending to all the rivers, creeks and surrounding land of our greatest backyard. The work we do today ensures our rivers, creeks and open spaces remain healthy and clean for generations to come.
We care for and protect our waterways
At Melbourne Water we care for our city’s beautiful rivers and creeks. We manage 25,000 kilometres of waterways across Greater Melbourne as well as working with our partners to manage 33,000 hectares of surrounding open space. That’s around 13,000 MCG ovals!

Water for the environment
Over time, many of the natural systems have been modified to meet the needs of our growing city. Today, some rivers receive only half the water they once did. That’s why we set aside water for the environment to keep them healthy.
Why our rivers and creeks matter
Our waterways are an important resource shared by people, plants and animals. They provide habitat for more than 1,800 species of native plants and 600 species of native animals. Through the Waterways and Drainage Charge, property owners help fund the essential work to protect the health of our waterways. This includes planting trees, improving habitats and managing water flows to support both ecosystems and community wellbeing.
By caring for our waterways, we’re protecting what makes Melbourne great: today, tomorrow and for generations to come.
