Construction underway at Greenvale Reservoir Park, unlocking more to explore

Melbourne Water and Parks Victoria have begun works to transform the southern section of Greenvale Reservoir Park into a vibrant green space, offering residents and visitors more chances to stay active, enjoy Victoria’s great beautiful outdoors and connect with nature right on their doorstep.

Landscaping works began in April, opening up previously unseen areas of the park for visitors to explore. Simultaneously, construction is ongoing for new and upgraded walking trails, barbecue facilities and amenities for visitors, with the park set to reopen in late 2025. These enhancements are designed with enjoyment and wellbeing in mind.

“Access to green space is so important for mental health, general wellbeing and as a place for people to come together,” said Melbourne Water Acting Executive General Manager of Service & Asset Lifecycle, Sean Hanrahan.

“We recognise this need and support the development of public green spaces around our reservoirs wherever possible. That's why Melbourne Water is excited to collaborate with Parks Victoria to make this area more accessible and welcoming for everyone, providing thousands of residents with greater access to much-needed green space and walking tracks.”

The upcoming improvements will enhance the natural environment surrounding the reservoir while maintaining its essential role in supplying safe drinking water to Melbourne’s north-western and western suburbs.

“Parks Victoria is delighted works are underway,” said Parks Victoria Western Melbourne District Manager Craig Bray.

“The new pedestrian access points and improvements to visitor facilities will be a fantastic asset for the community and a great place to enjoy nature in north-western Melbourne.”

Additionally, Melbourne Water is replacing the ageing perimeter fence around Greenvale Reservoir. The new fence will ensure water security while allowing the southern section of the park to reopen to the community, without compromising the vital role of the reservoir in supplying safe drinking water.

Visitors have enjoyed access to the northern section of Greenvale Reservoir Park for years, but the reopening of the southern section will increase the total area of valuable green space available to the growing local community.
