We’re working to remove an infestation of water weed (water hyacinth) discovered on our land within Namatjira Park, together with Kingston City Council and Agriculture Victoria.

Why this is important

Water hyacinth is one of the world’s worst weeds, spreading mainly through waterway flooding and human movement (accidental and intentional). The weed:

  • reduces water quality
  • clogs waterways
  • displaces native plants and animals.

Please do not attempt to treat, remove or dispose of this weed yourself, as this can lead to further infestation.

What’s happening and when

Removal works are due to commence mid-late July, and are expected to be completed within 8 weeks, weather permitting.

No chemicals will be used in the removal process – the weed will instead be fully excavated. As a precautionary measure, the top 10cm of soil off the base of the waterbody will also be scraped away, to remove any potential seeds.

The site will be restored to its original state when removal works are complete.

What to expect

Namatjira Park will remain open during works, however access will be restricted around the removal site.

For the safety of the community, the park entrances via Russ Street and Merlyn Avenue will be closed for the duration of the works while heavy machinery is being operated. Alternative access is available via Simon Street, Newport Road and Springs Road.

Parking will be restricted at the western end of Merlyn Avenue for the duration of the works. Minor traffic disruptions may also be experienced in the area.

We apologise for any inconvenience and will minimise disruption wherever possible, while maintaining a safe work site.
