Recruitment is now open for Project Firefighters

Melbourne Water is once again recruiting seasonal project firefighters to join the fire management crew for the coming fire season.

Melbourne Water is aiming to recruit at least 32 project firefighters for this summer, with positions now open.

Applications are being sought from across the state to ensure work in preparing for the coming fire season can commence, including implementing Victoria’s planned burning program.

“We are looking for people who are fit and healthy; hold a current driver’s licence and are keen to help protect our catchments from bushfire,” said Tim Sanders, Manager Delivery Southern Region.

The recruits will be stationed at various Melbourne Water locations across the state, stretching from Healesville, Warburton, and Woori Yallock in the Yarra Ranges through to the Thomson Dam.

The intake of project firefighters will support fire preparedness, response, and prescribed burning operations to reduce bushfire risk to people, property, and water supply catchments in our communities.

The advertising component of the campaign also emphasises the breadth of skills needed and importance of preparedness of the project firefighters.

Recruits will be trained in a comprehensive five-day general firefighting program by accredited staff along with rigorous technical training prior to the commencement of the upcoming fire season.

The course includes fire suppression strategies to contain bushfires in national parks and state forests. Recruits are also trained in first aid and practical driver training to help protect more Victorians by responding to emergencies in all types of circumstances and terrain.

The training program ensures project firefighters across the state have identical skills and knowledge, promoting interagency collaboration and a better service to the community.

“Becoming a project firefighter is a great way to make a contribution, be challenged, work as part of a team to protect our water supply catchments from the threat of bushfire,” added Tim Sanders.

Applications close on 30 July, and all interested are encouraged to apply online.
