Celebrating World Water Day

To celebrate World Water Day, Melbourne Water is shining a light on our commitment to delivering Melbourne’s great tasting water.

World Water Day is a reminder of how clean water and sanitation is essential to our way of life – in Melbourne and around the world. It is also a chance to reflect and appreciate our high standard, reliable water services, and the work we do to keep it that way.

Melbourne is one of the few cities in the world with protected catchments, this means we are able to provide drinking water of the highest standard, which needs very little treatment before it comes out of the tap.

“Melburnians get to enjoy our clean, clear, great tasting tap water every day and it’s something we take great pride in at Melbourne Water, remembering we were recently crowned Australia’s best tasting tap water last year,” said Melbourne Water Head of Water Supply, Dr Kim Mosse.

Melbourne’s water storage levels, currently at around 92%, are at their highest levels for this time of year in more than 25 years.

While this is good news, particularly in the context of building resilience against climate change, Melbourne Water remains focused on ensuring Melbourne continues to have access to great tasting water and reliable water services, not just for today, but for tomorrow and generations to come.

“However, we know how storage levels can change very quickly if we experience extended dry conditions or drought, so ensuring we have resilient water supplies remains a high priority,” said Dr Mosse.

“Over 5 million Victorians living in Melbourne and the surrounding region rely on Melbourne’s pristine water supply each day so it’s important we are well prepared to respond to any changes in climate and population growth as well.

“That's why we have been taking action and planning across 50-year time horizons to manage and protect this precious resource for our city, drawing on sources including catchments, desalinated water, and storm or recycled water for fit-for-purpose uses.

“This World Water Day it’s important to reflect and appreciate how lucky we are in Melbourne to have clean, affordable water that is readily available to our homes and businesses whenever we need it. We know that’s not the case for billions of people around the world,” said Dr Mosse.
