The Western Treatment Plant (WTP) is one of the most popular sites for birdwatching in Victoria, with 284 species of bird recorded at the site.
You must apply for a permit to bird watch at WTP, and must register each visit. A special permit may be needed to access some areas of the plant.
Total fire ban days
You are not permitted to enter the Western Treatment Plant on total fire ban days. Before you visit, please check the Country Fire Authority (CFA) website to see if a ban is in place.
Bird permit visitors
Western Treatment Plant Operations Office (New Farm Road, Werribee) will be closed from Friday 23 December 2016, re-opening Tuesday 3 January 2017.
All bird watching permits cannot be obtained at the Western Treatment Plant over this period.
All visitors wishing to obtain a short term permit can apply at the Werribee Visitor Information Centre located at the Werribee Zoo. Further information can be obtained from the Werribee Visitor Information.
The final Bird Watching Induction for 2016 will be held on Thursday 22 December 2016.
The first Bird Watching Induction for 2017 will be held on Thursday 19 January and be scheduled on a fortnightly basis throughout 2017.
