Shading and cooling at Jacana Wetlands

Current

Melbourne Water is shading, cooling and greening Jacana Wetlands to make them enjoyable for more days of the year, enhancing the amenity for the local community.

What’s happening and when

  • We planted 170 native trees (Red Gums) to create shade for walkers and joggers along the shared paths.
  • We also planted 12,500 native shrubs creating understory garden-beds between the path and wetland so that dog access to important frog habitat is reduced.
  • Planting will take place in May / June 2018.

Melbourne Water doesn’t work alone. We collaborated with the Friends of Moonee Ponds Creek to select trees and garden-bed species that will enhance the natural biodiversity of the area.

Supported by Hume City Council, this project forms part of our Urban Cooling Program which aims to transform 30 hectares of public land with shade and cooling by 2021.

Why these works are important

The Jacana Wetlands Urban Cooling Project is creating tree canopy over a shared trail so that it can be enjoyed for more days of the year, improving access for recreation and improving the health and wellbeing of the local community.

Tree canopy will create shade to improve the comfort of cyclist and pedestrians by protecting them from summer sun. When it is warm and sunny, just tree shade alone can make it feel 10 degrees cooler.

About the Urban Cooling Program

Across Melbourne we are transforming public land to create a greener and cooler region. We are working together with stakeholders and the community to create cooler and greener spaces so they are enjoyable for more days of the year.

Improving green spaces for cooling can occur through providing trees and vegetation for shade, and water to improve vegetation health and evapotranspiration, or both. Vegetation and water used to cool green space can also provide habitat, improve amenity, and help manage stormwater flows to waterways.

Last year we delivered 24 hectares of shade, cooling and greening by planting trees along paths at Jacana and Edithvale wetlands. By 2021 we plan to deliver a further 6 hectares in public places across Melbourne.

By working together we can create greener and cooler, places to enjoy all year round.
