Have your say about upcoming M41 construction works
Melbourne Water is inviting residents to have their say about upcoming construction works required to upgrade the M41 Water Main.
M41 project team members will be available to discuss the project plan and answer questions at two upcoming community information sessions. The first session will be held at the Fitzroy Town Hall from 4pm, Thursday August 10. The second session will be held at the North Fitzroy Library from 11am on Saturday August 12.
The M41 water main supplies drinking water to over 350,000 residents and businesses in Melbourne’s inner suburbs. It runs from Merri Creek, Northcote to Wellington Parade, East Melbourne.
The existing water main is almost 100 years old and must be replaced. Deterioration of the existing main has led to leaks which have created significant community disturbance during emergency repair works.
Melbourne Water has developed a preferred option for the new water main alignment which balances a number of important factors such as social and environmental impacts, technical constraints and cost.
Project Manager Peter Clark said community feedback had also been incorporated into the design process.
“We heard loud and clear from many residents and local community members about the importance of trees, particularly mature trees and parkland, and so we will avoid tree removal wherever possible,” he said.
“We are committed to retaining all mature trees in Edinburgh Gardens and returning any parkland to its original condition or better.”
“The final chosen alignment through Edinburgh gardens has been guided by the community.
“We do want to be clear to residents that some impacts in Edinburgh Gardens will be unavoidable. We expect to be working in the Gardens for approximately eight weeks.
“Replacing the M41 water main is a major construction project. The water main pipe is very large, 1150mm in diameter, and will require excavation of a large trench so that it can be installed.
“Local impacts may include vegetation and tree removal, increased dust, noise, local road closures and associated traffic disruption. We apologise in advance for any disruption caused by these essential works.
“Given these impacts, the upcoming community information sessions are an ideal opportunity for residents to chat with our project team face-to-face about ways we can minimise inconvenience and disruption.
“At the sessions we will be asking residents to tell us what they like about our proposed plan and to highlight things we might not have thought about and areas for improvement.”
Once Melbourne Water has informed the community about the preferred alignment option and gathered feedback, the process to appoint a construction contractor for the detailed design and construction works will occur.
Appointment of our construction partner should be completed in late 2017 with construction to commence in early 2018. It’s expected the project will take up to two years to complete.
We will continue to engage with key stakeholders, community members and local business throughout this process and seek further feedback.
