High Street Reservoir closed

High Street, Reservoir closed from Friday 17 March to Wednesday 22 March 2017 for essential water main works.

Melbourne Water will be working day and night from 6pm on Friday 17 March until 5am on Wednesday 22 March 2017 to construct the new M40 water main across High Street, Reservoir.

High Street will be closed from Northernhay Street to Broadway during this period.

  • Motorists travelling south can travel down Spring Street or along Broadway to Plenty Road and Tyler Street.
  • Motorists travelling north will be diverted to Spring Street at Regent Street.
  • Passengers for the Dyson’s bus service 552 will be diverted to new temporary stops along Spring Street or can catch the 555 bus service. This bus service will not travel down High Street.
  • Cyclists and pedestrians will have restricted access along the western side of High Street.
  • There will be restricted access to private property for local residents.

People travelling through this area are urged to follow traffic management signs and the directions of traffic controllers, and to plan ahead and allow additional travel time.

Melbourne Water Major Program Delivery General Manager, Eamonn Kelly, said the M40 water main renewal project is critical to keeping Melbourne’s water supply network operating smoothly.

“Our reservoirs at High Street Preston form a vital part of our water supply network to the CBD and inner suburbs. It’s essential we undertake these works to ensure Melbourne continues to have a safe and reliable supply of drinking water.”

“Our work on the M40 project is progressing to schedule. We need to construct the new water main across High Street and to do this we need to close all four lanes for three consecutive days. We will be working day and night to ensure disruptions are kept to a minimum.”

“While High Street is closed, we are also taking the opportunity to install a second pipeline near the intersection of Howard Street Reservoir, as early works for the Preston Pump Station Upgrade. By constructing both pipelines at the same time, we will minimise the impact on residents, motorists and the community.”

“Melbourne Water apologises for any inconvenience these important improvements and associated works might cause and thanks the community for its patience.”
