An unlikely treasure! Be the first to know what’s on at the Western Treatment Plant

A new online community hub is now available for locals around the Western Treatment Plant (WTP) in Wyndham to keep up to date with what’s happening at the site. 

The Western Treatment Plant Online Community Hub has been designed to provide the community with regular updates on the plant’s latest projects, news and events. 

The WTP is iconic and synonymous with the area. It plays a vital role in public health by receiving and treating about half of Melbourne’s sewage, but it also has historic, environmental and cultural significance.  

Melbourne Water Western Treatment Plant and Sewerage Transfer Manager, Alanna Wright said the WTP is an unlikely treasure.

“The site is a very special place. There is always something interesting happening and we want to share that with locals in a simple and interactive way,” Ms Wright said. 

“Many people may not realise the plant not only provides low-cost sustainable sewage treatment, but it has a continually evolving resource recovery program coupled with a thriving ecosystem, internationally-recognised bird habitat and popular education program.”

Western Treatment Plant facts and statistics;

• Sustainably treats more than 182,500 million litres of sewage a year.
• Roughly the size of Phillip Island.
• Established in the early 1890s after a Royal Commission into the sanitary state of Melbourne. Included on the Victorian Heritage Register for historical, archaeological and technical significance to Victoria.
• Comprehensive monitoring program in place to detect odour and respond in a timely way.
• Home to more than 300 species of birds, the WTP is reportedly second only to Kakadu in Australia for recreational bird watching, and is recognised as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.
