Temporary closure of Cardinia Reservoir Park paves the way for dam upgrade

Cardinia Reservoir Park will be closed to the public temporarily as part of a Melbourne Water project to upgrade Cardinia Reservoir dam to protect and prolong its life.

The closure, from Tuesday 26 April to Sunday 24 July 2022, will allow extensive geotechnical investigations to take place on the dam embankment, a vital part of the planning and design process.

While initial geotechnical investigations were completed in 2020 and 2021, further investigations are needed to gather more accurate information about ground conditions to inform the detailed design.

Melbourne Water General Manager Asset Management Services Tim Wood said Cardinia Reservoir was constructed in the 1970's to the best industry standards of the day. As dam design standards have improved over the years, the upgrade project will ensure Cardinia Reservoir complies with best practice dam safety management standards.

“We want to ensure the dam complies with the latest engineering standards as part of our proactive management and normal operational maintenance for all our water supply reservoirs,” Mr Wood said.

“We are dedicated to enhancing life and liveability through world-class infrastructure and healthy waterways. This upgrade will allow us to continue the supply of high quality drinking water to Melburnians long into the future.”

In addition to the temporary closure, there may be some minor impacts to the community including heavy vehicle movements and construction traffic along Wellington Road and other local roads for access to the site.

Tim Wood said public safety is Melbourne Water’s top priority; the closure to the park is required to ensure the safety of the community and our workers.

“We thank the public for their understanding and patience while we carry out these important works.”

The early planning and design stage of the Cardinia Reservoir dam upgrade project is expected to be complete in late 2023. The upgrade is due to start in the summer of 2024/2025. Cardinia Reservoir will continue to operate within Melbourne Water’s water supply system throughout the upgrade works.
