Revitalising Yan Yean Reservoir – have your say

Melbourne Water is seeking ideas from the community about potential increased recreational and greater open space uses for the Yan Yean Reservoir in the future.

A community engagement program will be delivered through April and May to better understand what people value about the reservoir and what additional features and activities could make it an even more enjoyable place to visit.

This program is in addition to and will complement the upgrade works to be undertaken by Parks Victoria in the Yan Yean Reservoir Park from later this year during Spring.

Construction of Yan Yean Reservoir was completed in 1857 and is Melbourne’s oldest water supply reservoir. The surrounding land is home to a variety of native plants and animals. The Yan Yean Reservoir Park currently provides picnic areas and walking tracks for community use.

Melbourne Water has recognised there may be opportunities to enhance recreational uses, allow additional access and increase community benefit of the asset.

Melbourne Water’s Acting Manager, Land and Collaborative Planning, Ellen Mitchell said it is important for people in the area to have the opportunity to put their view forward about possible future uses of Yan Yean Reservoir.

“We are excited about hearing what you have to say and investigating ways this asset can be best utilised as part of Melbourne Water’s vision to enhance life and liveability,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Community ideas will be considered in the development of the Yan Yean Reservoir Draft Master Plan.”

Water supply will remain the main function of the Yan Yean Reservoir, but additional recreation opportunities and open green space will be considered where compatible with this service.

Parks Victoria’s Spring works will include upgrades to the Southern Picnic area and toilets, the Middle Picnic area and the Northern Picnic area and toilets. These upgrades will provide essential amenities for the community utilising the upgraded Park space.
