Moreland community to help activate Merlynston Creek Park, Coburg North

Melbourne Water is calling on the local community for ideas on how they can help turn an underutilised piece of Melbourne Water land in Coburg North into a healthier, safer and more connected community space.

The vacant land is a 5000m2 drainage reserve located on the corner of Tonkin Avenue and Adler Grove, Coburg North and has huge potential. It will be the first in a series of Melbourne Water sites that will be offered up for community use.

Melbourne Water is seeking applications from a wide range of community group members who have an interest in the space.

This can include wildlife, culture, sports, arts, music, or theatre groups who perhaps need a space to grow food, practice skills, outdoor classes, performances, art installations and more. School or kinder groups are also encouraged to apply.

Applications will be considered for a Melbourne Water Community Land Start Up Package to help the successful applicant achieve their vision and deliver a project with a $1,000 contribution towards costs of getting the project up and running.

The package also includes a two-year licence for the use of the land and a planning workshop to help bring the application to life.

Melbourne Water Team Leader, Liveability and Land Use Planning, Virginia Harris, said the community was being encouraged to use their imagination to enhance the park.

“As Melbourne continues to grow, the need for access to open outdoor areas and green spaces grows too,” she said.

“Melbourne Water owns 33,000 hectares of land across greater Melbourne. This land is essential in supporting our city’s water operation – but we want it to do more.”

“We want our land to benefit local communities by creating safe, healthy, beautiful and more connected spaces. This underutilised park space at Coburg North will be the first example of us taking our land to the community for their input on how it should be used.”

Anyone with a project idea that will benefit the wider community is encouraged to apply at https://yoursay.melbournewater.com.au/our-space-your-place Applications will be open until Sunday May 13 2018. A community project at this site will compliment Moreland City Council’s Merlynston Linear Park Development Plan
