Melbourne Water to partner in slum revitalisation research

Melbourne Water is excited to be a project partner on the Welcome Trust project ‘water sensitive approach to slum revitalisation in developing cities’.

Informal settlements, or slums, are home to more than a billion people, almost exclusively in the developing world. The premise of this project is that it is possible to revitalise these settlements through the application of water sensitive design approaches to water and sanitation needs that can enable multiple beneficial outcomes.
Melbourne Water will contribute and share our expertise and experience in designing and implementing water sensitive approaches to this project. Melbourne Water will be:
  • Contributing to site assessment and concept designs of flood management initiatives within informal settlements identified for intervention
  • Undertaking flood analysis to support the design of these interventions
  • Providing training and capacity building for local engineers
This is not the first time that Melbourne Water has been involved in making positive changes in developing cities. We have previously provided technical support to the development of a flood management strategy for Dili in Timor Leste.
Melbourne Water’s partnership on this project is another way we are demonstrating our commitment to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. For more information visit the Welcome Trust visit site.
