Melbourne Water will upgrade nine sewer manhole covers across the sewer network so it can continue to provide Melbournians with a safe and reliable sewerage service now and into the future.
About the Project
Melbourne Water has recently developed new CCTV camera technology to help assess the condition of the underground sewer network. This technology means that longer range inspections can be conducted on Melbourne’s sewer network. To enable Melbourne Water to use the new camera technology, nine sewer manhole covers will need upgrading- five of these will be in the west of Melbourne and four in the South East.
Manholes are above ground concrete access points which allow Melbourne Water personnel to enter the sewerage system and conduct maintenance and condition monitoring of the sewer network.
The project will involve:
Removing and disposing of the old manhole covers.
Making adjustments to the existing manhole opening to ensure the new lid fits correctly.
Casting the new concrete manhole lid on site and positioning it into place with a crane once cured.
Install and compact crushed rock around the manhole lid to ensure the natural surface is flush with its surrounding.
Site clean-up and reinstatement work to the existing condition prior to construction.
What to expect
Aqua Metro Services on behalf of Melbourne Water will complete these works. The Project Team will make effort to minimise impact to community and local businesses however, during works you may notice:
- General construction noise.
- Some odour when the manhole lid is opened.
- Changed traffic conditions on some roads, traffic management will be in place to safely guide motorists through the area.
- Pedestrian management along pedestrian trails as we move our machinery across paths.
Works will commence in the west of Melbourne in June and finish in the south east of Melbourne by November 2022. Each manhole cover upgrade will take two weeks to complete, weather permitting.
Work hours will be between 7am and 5pm each day. Please note your sewerage services will not be interrupted as part of these works.
The Project Team will communicate with residents throughout works via letters and phone calls. For more information about this project please call 1800 960 977.
