Melbourne Water is upgrading the Lillydale Lake Wetland to continue its important work of keeping our rivers and creeks healthy.

Wetlands are a series of shallow, densely planted, man-made ponds that help filter pollutants that wash into our stormwater drains from roads, hard surfaces, parks and gardens. Essentially it acts as a natural filtration system that captures pollutants before entering our rivers and oceans.

Why the works are necessary

The Lillydale Lake Wetland is not performing to stormwater treatment quality standards. This is due to inadequate vegetation cover as the wetland is too deep for plants to survive. Additionally, water flows from the Olinda Creek are entering the wetland too quickly for its natural filtration process to occur. As a result, the wetland needs to be upgraded to restore it to its original process.

The project is being undertaken in two stages:

  • Stage One of works was completed in late 2021. This work involved draining the wetland, drying and treating stockpiled sediment, and reshaping the base of the wetland.
  • Stage Two is currently underway and involves revegetating the wetland area with over 45,000 native plants is expected to take place in early 2022 when the weather is better suited for plant growth.

What to expect and when

We will make every effort to minimise the impact of these essential works on the local community and the environment; however during Stage Two planting works you may notice:

  • Intermittent closures to the boardwalk in the wetlands
  • Shared pedestrian and light vehicle movement between the site compound and wetland area. Please follow signage and instruction from the onsite team
  • Lowered water levels in the wetland area for crews to access for wetland planting
  • Netting in place over the wetland. Netting will be in place for three to six months is placed over the freshly planted trees to protect the plants until they reach maturity. Netting is regularly monitored and checked, please contact the project team if you notice any issues onsite.

Crews will be on site between 7am and 6pm from Monday to Friday and if required Saturday between 7:30am and 3pm.
