We will soon undertake works to improve canoe and kayak access to the Yarra River at Westerfolds Park, Templestowe.

This site has been identified as a priority location to improve access, and these works will contribute towards achieving the strategic objectives and vision of the Regional Paddle Sports Centre. This was identified as a premium paddling and recreation area in our ‘Improving access to the Yarra River project’ report, developed in 2018.

To improve canoe and kayak access to the Yarra River, we will:

  • install mudstone steps with a handrail on one side, down the bank into the river beneath Fitzsimons Lane bridge
  • create formalised judging and spectator seating areas adjacent to the bridge, with seating elements and revegetation of the area.

This will create a green relaxing space for the community to enjoy, and improve the amenity of this area.

Works are expected to commence in November 2020 and will take around one month to complete, depending on weather.

What to expect

During the works, local community members and users of the Yarra River for recreational pursuits will notice increased activity in the area.

  • There is potential for some noise and dust, as well as truck and machinery on site.
  • The car park will remain open during the works, and there is also alternate parking at Westerfolds Park.
  • During working hours for a period of two weeks from the end of November to mid-December, the southbound entry to the access road will remain open, but the northbound entry will be closed. All access will be available after hours.

We will have traffic management in place as required, and will make every effort to minimise the impact on the local community and environment.
