We are working in partnership with Parks Victoria, Manningham Council and Wurundjeri to undertake major rehabilitation works at Bolin Bolin Billabong, improving its ecological health for future generations.

Why this project is important

Located next to the Yarra River in Bulleen, the billabong is one of the few remaining in urban Melbourne and has high ecological and cultural significance.

The project aims to restore natural water inflow regimes and rehabilitate the surrounding environment, improving habitat for local wildlife as well as amenity for people using the area.

What's happening

The project commenced this year. Three phases of work still to be undertaken include:

  • establishing an environmental watering regime by diverting more water from the Yarra River
  • upgrading paths to and around the billabong
  • pruning hazardous trees
  • controlling weeds
  • revegetating terrestrial and semi-aquatic plants

Proposed timings

Phase Two of the project is ready for delivery and will involve further weed control, revegetation maintenance and a trial environmental watering event.

Phase Three will see further revegetation and weed control, and by 2020 the billabong will have transformed into a wonderful rehabilitated billabong attracting wildlife and visitors alike.
