Have your say about recreational boating on the Yarra

Monday 28 August 2017
Melburnians are being encouraged to have their say about how recreational boating activities could be improved along their stretch of the Yarra River.

If you canoe, kayak or row on the Yarra and you would like to see Melbourne Water support the creation of additional ramps in an out of the river and/ or upgrade current facilities, now is the time to make your voice heard.

Melbourne Water Manager, Land Liveability and Stewardship Hannah Pexton said the survey was open to everyone with an interest in paddling on the Yarra.

“Paddling activities such as canoeing, kayaking and rowing are popular recreational pursuits for many people,” she said.

“With this in mind, Melbourne Water has begun exploring options for supporting the creation additional paddling ramps along the Yarra River, and upgrading current areas used by paddlers for entry/exit to the River.

“We want to hear from school groups, canoe clubs, commercial operators, property owners and everyone else interested in future on-water recreational use of our iconic river.

“We want to know why you choose to paddle at the sites you currently visit, where you would like to see new ramps installed, and what upgrades we can make to existing formal or informal paddling sites and what design elements new or upgraded facilities should include.”

Melbourne Water is committed to achieving its vision of enhancing life and liveability and exploring the relationship between waterway environmental values, amenity values, and liveability.

An important element of the investigation is in seeking to understand the design measures that are required to ensure paddlers have safe access and exit points and adequate information about particular paddling locations, while still protecting the Yarra River’s important values.

Melbourne Water also recognises the need to be inclusive of all peoples and abilities for both the ramp locations and the design features of the ramps.

This information will also be used to inform the development of the Yarra Strategic Plan, which Melbourne Water is leading in collaboration with state government and local government agencies, and in partnership with Traditional Owners.

Ms Pexton encouraged everyone with an interest to contribute via the official survey portal.

“Since the survey went live we have received significant feedback on our media platforms, which is great, but you need to complete the survey if you would like your comments to be officially considered for our strategic plan.”

“The survey will only take between five and 10 minutes to compete, so there’s no reason not to tell us want you want to see. Your feedback can help deliver real investment in recreational boating along the Yarra.”
