Community to name new park after launch success

Tuesday 9 May 2017

Nearly 300 people turned out to launch a new community park along a 100 metre
section of the historic Main Outfall Sewer reserve in Williams Landing on Saturday April 29, and now the park needs a name!

To continue the celebration of the Greening the Pipeline initiative, suggestions are being sought from the community to name the first park (located between Triller Court and Mallard Close, Williams Landing).

The Greening the Pipeline initiative is a partnership between Melbourne Water, VicRoads, Wyndham City Council, City West Water and supported by Greening the West. A grant was provided by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning which contributed to the construction of the first park.

The initiative aims to convert 27km of the heritage listed Main Outfall Sewer reserve,
along Federation Trail, into parkland. Community feedback received at the park launch, which featured a range of community and family activities, was highly positive and included a number of suggestions for further developments as part of Greening the Pipeline.

Early name ideas include ‘Pipeline Park’ and ‘Mansergh Park’, after James Mansergh, the engineer responsible for Melbourne’s first sewer system and the Main Outfall Sewer.

Melbourne Water General Manager Integrated Planning, Chris Williams, said he was
extremely pleased with community turnout and involvement at the park launch and
hoped the momentum would continue with the naming of the park.

“This park is the first step towards creating a vibrant space that will connect
communities, enhance active transport options for the region, and provide a unique
space to meet, play and relax.”

“The local community played a key role in designing the park. We incorporated their
ideas for seating, exercise equipment and extensive landscaping into the park’s design, so it’s only right they have the opportunity to name it as well.

“We will continue to engage the community as we further develop the design of key
sections of Greening the Pipeline.

“The Greening the Pipeline initiative is a great example of how we can transform disused infrastructure into assets for the community to enjoy.”

Park name entries should be submitted to http://greeningthepipeline.com.au with the winning name to be announced on the website and via Melbourne Water social media at the end of May 2017.
