Encouraging Melburnians to Imagine the Yarra

Wednesday 6 September 2017
Melbourne Water is seeking community input to help create a vision for the Yarra River.

Melburnians are being encouraged to share their stories of Melbourne’s iconic River, celebrating its past, present and future.

The Imagine the Yarra project aims to build a collective vision of the Yarra that will then be used to form the Yarra Strategic Plan. The plan will outline the community’s long-term vision for the Yarra, and provide the basis for the future planning of the River corridor and each of its reaches.

Melbourne Water is leading the development of the Yarra Strategic Plan in partnership with Traditional Owners and the other public entities with responsible for managing the different values provided by the River.

Melbourne Water General Manager, Customer & Strategy, Gavan O’Neill, says everyone with a story of the Yarra is encouraged to contribute.

“You may use the River for recreation, you might have a cultural connection with the River, or maybe you have memories of the Yarra from years gone by. Whatever your Yarra story, we want to hear from you,” he said.

“You don’t need to live near the River to be involved. Anyone with a Yarra story is encouraged to help us shape the community vision.”

The Yarra River runs for 242 kilometres from the Yarra Ranges, through the suburbs to the CBD and eventually out to Port Phillip Bay.

Mr O’Neill said he had fond childhood memories of the iconic River.

“I grew up near the Yarra and spent much of my youth in and around the River. The river provided a place to unwind, a place to swim and to meet other kids from my neighbourhood.

“For these reasons, the Yarra is a fundamental part of my childhood and these memories are my personal connection to the River.

“This is just one story, and we know there are many others, which we’re so excited for you to share.”

The development of the community vision and Yarra Strategic Plan are actions under the Victorian Government’s Yarra River Action Plan.

“Ultimately, we hope to gain a better understanding of the connection people have with the River,” said Mr O’Neill.

“Melbourne Water has a responsibility as caretaker of the Yarra to understand what it means to Melburnians and then to create our strategy for the River in line with that vision.”

The consultation period runs from the start of September until the end of October. To share your Yarra story visit www.imaginetheyarra.com.au or email YarraStrategicPlan@melbournewater.com.au

Melbourne Water have been appointed as the lead agency to develop and implement the Yarra Strategic Plan, which falls under the broader Yarra River Action Plan, managed by the Department of Environment, Water, Land and Planning.
