Catchment Images
Melbourne Water's 'Life in the Tall Eucalypt Forests' exhibition is a series of photographs by nature photojournalist Esther Beaton that capture the beauty of Melbourne's catchment areas.
More than 157,000 hectares of natural forest around Melbourne have been set aside for the harvesting of water to supply the city. Dominated by the mountain ash, many of these catchments have been closed to public access for over 100 years, and because life in the forests has remained largely undisturbed, the incredible biodiversity of the ecosystem has been preserved.
Nature photographer Esther Beaton has collaborated with Dr David Lindenmayer, a renowned forest ecologist, to create 'Life in the Tall Eucalypt Forests'. They have helped to produce a stunning, user-friendly photographic journey though the forests and provide an insight into the unique ecosystem therein.
Melbourne Water is committed to the continued supply of safe, healthy drinking water. Protecting the tall eucalypt forests is therefore vital, not only to preserve this unique natural resource, but also to ensure the ongoing health of Melbourne's water supply.
