Under Stage 3a water restrictions, can I wash my car?

A bucket, filled directly from a tap can be used to clean windows, mirrors and lights; and spot-remove corrosive substances. Cars may not be washed at home with drinking water.

An efficient commercial car wash using 70 litres of water or less per vehicle can be used. Look for signage, which is displayed and informs you how many litres of water are being used for each car washed.

How do I know if a commercial car wash is an approved, water efficient car wash?

A commercial carwash will display signage - ‘working within water restrictions under an approved water conservation plan’.

A commercial car wash must not use more than 70 litres of potable (drinking) water per vehicle and/or have developed a Water Conservation Plan, which has been approved by the relevant water retailer. A Water Conservation Plan can be prepared either in accordance with the Water Rating Scheme developed by the Smart Water Fund and the Australian Car Wash Association, or independently. Look for signage that is to be displayed and informs you how many litres of water are being used for each car washed.
