Reducing greenhouse emissions

Nearly all of Melbourne Water’s emissions come from the sewage treatment process and the electricity we use. We believe we have an obligation to lower our greenhouse gas emissions. One of the ways we do this is by using energy from renewable sources.

We are determined to protect the environment by cutting our carbon footprint. Melbourne Water has a goal of zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2018 and we are working hard to achieve this.

We have already succeeded in almost halving our greenhouse emissions since 2000-2001, utilising a mix of hydro-electricity and capturing biogas to be used for electricity generation.

Although we do purchase some carbon offsets to mitigate our emissions from our office-based activities, our principle aim is to target reductions within our business before purchasing further carbon offsets.

We participate in the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) System which monitors corporate greenhouse gas emissions, energy production and energy consumption.
