Tours
Melbourne Water provides open days and tours of the Western Treatment Plant to show interested groups how sewage is treated, how methane gas is used to generate electricity for the plant, what we're doing to increase water recycling and what we're doing to reduce the nitrogen input to Port Phillip Bay.
A coach tour of the Western Treatment Plant takes about two hours.
We have developed a range of education resources, including the Western Treatment Plant Explorer, which takes users on an interactive journey around the plant.
The plant also includes the Melbourne Water Discovery Centre, which incorporates interactive displays on all aspects of the water cycle. The exhibit looks at where our water comes from, what goes on in the city beneath us and what happens to the water we flush down the toilet and pour down the sink.
A huge satellite photograph of Melbourne has been installed in the centre's foyer and visitors can walk across it and locate their homes within the context of the larger catchment.
