Western Treatment Plant community liaison committee

Established in 1998, the Western Treatment Plant Community Liaison Committee includes representatives of a number of groups and organisations, including Melbourne Water, other government water and environmental authorities, local council and the community.

The committee meets quarterly and discusses topics such as the plant’s performance and environmental compliance, major works and improvements, and issues relating to the community.

The committee works closely with the plant’s Biodiversity Conservation Advisory Committee to ensure operations preserve the biodiversity on the site.

Biodiversity Conservation Advisory Committee

The Biodiversity Conservation Advisory Committee provides specialist advice to Melbourne Water on the conservation and management of the Western Treatment Plant’s unique native biodiversity values.

Combining the expertise of a number of government and non-government agencies, the committee was instrumental in initiating wildlife studies and developing the first biodiversity conservation plans for the site. It also assisted Melbourne Water develop a biodiversity conservation management plan for the Western Treatment Plant.

Members of the committee include:

  • Melbourne Water
  • representatives of neighbouring state government and council properties
  • other government agencies
  • experts in botany, ornithology, mammalogy, herpetology and marine biology
  • representatives of interest groups that visit the site for bird watching and studies of birds and other wildlife

The committee meets four times a year at the plant.
