Trunk Sewers
Trunk sewers are large pipes that carry sewage to the treatment plant. There are three large trunk sewers in Melbourne’s sewerage system.
The western trunk sewer was commissioned in 1993 and runs from Brooklyn Pumping Station to the Western Treatment Plant. It is:
- 4.4 metres in diameter at its maximum width
- 40 metres below ground level at its lowest point
- 23 kilometres long
The south-east trunk sewer runs from Kew Pumping Station to the Eastern Treatment Plant. It is:
- 4 metres in diameter at its maximum width
- 30 kilometres long
The north-western sewer was commissioned in 1998 and connects Maribyrnong and Moonee Ponds sewerage systems to the western trunk sewer. It is:
- 11 kilometres long
- services around 150,000 households in Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs with capacity to service a further 200,000 households as Melbourne’s population grows
