New Areas of Responsibility
As part of the Victorian Government’s Our Water Our Future action plan, in 2005 our waterways and drainage boundary was extended by more than 5,000 square kilometres to cover the Port Phillip and Westernport region.
Where is the new boundary?
The region now extends from high up in the Yarra Ranges across to Ballan in the west, right across to Tarago in the east and encapsulates Phillip Island and the Mornington Peninsula in the south.
What do these changes mean?
For the first time, a single authority has responsibility for regional drainage, flood plain and waterways services across the whole region. That means we can take an integrated approach to managing waterways and drainage, and give the health of our rivers a better chance in the long term.
We are now providing services for the first time to:
- Moorabool Shire
- Macedon Ranges Shire
- Mitchell Shire
- City of Greater Geelong.
We have also extended our services in:
- Melton Shire
- Bass Coast Shire
- South Gippsland Shire
- Mornington Peninsula Shire
- City of Wyndham
- City of Hume.
To fund waterway, floodplain and regional drainage management activities in these areas, we are introducing a charge that is similar to the charge already in place in other areas of Melbourne. You can find out more about the charging arrangements in the Waterways charge page.
Who did we work with on these changes?
We worked closely with local communities and stakeholders to gain local information, discuss expectations and establish appropriate service levels.
What’s happening in my local area?
